Pintle-regulated Venturi Air/Fuel Induction for Fuel Economy and Performance

PRV Performance Summary

PRV performance has developed, patented, and tested an automotive air/fuel induction system, to improve engine torque and reduce throttling losses. Improved premixing of fuel and air ensures greater engine efficiency and lowers tailpipe emissions. The Pintle-regulated Venturi induction (PRV) with fuel injection directly at the throat, improves fuel economy and increases torque by

  1. reducing piston pumping loss;
  2. pre-vaporizing fuel upstream of the engine, thereby cooling the fuel/air mixture and lowering the mixture density; and
  3. eliminating fuel stratification on the cylinder walls.

Figure 1 is a three-dimensional drawing of a PRV induction manifold for a four-cylinder engine. All pintles are withdrawn in parallel as the gas pedal is pressed.

PRV induction reduces fuel consumption, increases torque, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions -- at no additional cost relative to a conventional manifold system. Consequently, smaller, lighter engines are facilitated with PRV induction, particularly when coupled with a turbo charging system. Independent dynamometer testing has demonstrated a 15 to 20% improvement in torque across the entire throttle range while concurrently delivering substantial fuel economy improvement.

Finally, PRV induction is complementary to hybrid technology and will improve the performance of ethanol-fueled engines.
